About
My new life as a widow, mother, and Nana. This is now about our new journey down the road of new beginnings, our ups and downs, and what we are doing and learning. And hoping to keep as much of our old ways as I can, while learning new ways along this road. We live off a fixed income and make as much as we can ourselves. We find new ways to use old things, or use them in a different way. We try to live as simple as we can, by choice. I’m hoping that this blog will help others along their journeys in life. As our journeys here on earth are changing, some changes we like while others are hard on us,but by God’s grace we will make it through them all.
The simple life, living off God’s land, one day at a time.
(Before becoming a widow)I’m a homesteading, homeschooler, farm mom and wife. I’ve been married 10+ years, kids(his ,mine and ours is 9). We raise and grow 80%+ of what we eat. I enjoy : knitting, cooking from scratch, reading, blogging, canning, quilting, and more. My husband has prostate cancer in his bones. So I’m now learning all about that and new drugs. I love learning new things. I like to find all the ways I can to stretch a dollar, it’s become a mission. I am very creative and try to make do with what I have on hand. And would like to share with others what I know. I by no means know it all. We started living off the farm more then ten years ago. Tommy said I could stay home with the kids. What a blessing. But with only one income and 5 mouths to feed, well I start homesteading, farming, gardening, canning out of have too. Now I do it because it’s just much better food. The Lord has blessed us much over the years. We have only had the Internet for a few months, we have no cable etc. We do have power but we hang clothes out side, use the power very wisely, it’s going up in cost too.
Lately, a lot of my friends have ask me how to do this or that, how to store food, what to store. So I started blogging, they can come here.

Thank you both very much. I’ll be getting another tank of gas. And I have ordered a drivers door window glass, as the truck didn’t have one when we traded for it. But the gas mileage was great. I’ll being getting a few things for Tommy (sprite, ensure, suckers). The suckers will help him with his dry mouth, caused from the pain meds. And the sprite and ensure is about all that is staying down right now.The rest of the money I’ll save for now until it’s needed. Thank you both very much. Thank you for letting God use you to bless us so. It really touches our hearts to know so many really care.

I am new to your site and enjoy it very much. I am one of 3 breast and one prostate cancer survivors in my family. I remember how kind everyone was to us. My biggest problem was saying “Yes” when people offered help. They need to feel helpful too. Once I understood that, things were easier. I’m a nurse and used to being the caregiver not the receiver. I’m sure Tommy understand what a gift it is to be surrounded by friends and family in difficult times like this. Enjoy the heat!

Thank you again for everything. I’m glad you enjoy it here. I am learning to take people up on their offers to help. And it’s humbling as it’s easier for me to give then to receive. But I’m learning. We know we are very blessed to have so many people, family and friends, around us. With a few snow flurries this morning, the heat is wonderful. Thank you again.

If you have not already, please check with American Cancer Society. They can be a large help in getting you financial assistance for gas back and forth for treatment for Tommy. They can put in touch with financial help with utilities, rent/mortgage. They will put in touch with local people/organizations that could be of help to you. I wish you and your family the best.

I have checked with ACS, and Tommy is not able to get treatment as we do not have insurance. And some places have helped with bills. But our area is having to many people needing help due to the economy. So the Lord keeps us going, one day at a time. He has always meet our needs.

We have a garden now because of the high prices in the stores & price of gas. We are trying to stretch money.We have red potatoes in garden & was going to use cold pack canner,but my wife read in one of her canning books that we must use a prssure cooker which she is afraid to do.She said we must freeze them. Can we or not use cold pack canner for potatoes? We also will have corn I hope.
We live on V.A. comp, so a garden will help. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Another method to save potatoes year round has been used by my family for generations. First, find out how deep the frost line is in your area. Dig below the frost line enough so the potatoes won’t freeze. Line the hole with straw so the potatoes don’t come in contact with the earth, layer the potatoes, cover potatoes with more straw, then cover the straw with the earth soil. Important…be sure to locate a section of your ground that does not get water run off from rain or melting snow. When you have so many potatoes, canning and having a fresh stash is the way to go. When you dig up potatoes from you stash hole, be sure to cover it back with the straw and earth soil.
